On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong made history by becoming the first man ever to set foot on the face of the moon. The accomplishment remains the single most important moment in space exploration, and it was also America's signature victory in the Cold War's Space Race with the Soviet Union. Now, the US Mint is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the accomplishment with seven domed coins, including this clad half dollar. It is part of a maximum mintage of 750,000 pieces, which also include the proof version.
Patriotic Moon Landing Design by Phebe Hemphill
Designed by Gary Cooper and sculpted by Joseph Menna, the coin's obverse pays homage to the three NASA programs that made the Apollo 11 moon landing possible, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," which are inscribed along the rim at the top along with images of the moon in different phases. Below them is Neil Armstrong's footprint, which he made when he left the lunar module for his first moonwalk.
Neil Armstrong stands between the American flag and the lunar module on Phebe Hemphill's reverse. The design first appeared in a photo from the lunar visit. The image is reflected on the visor of Buzz Aldrin's helmet, the shape of which is reproduced by the convex shape of the coin. "HALF DOLLAR" is inscribed within the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one), are inscribed above and below the visor, respectively.
Perfect MS70 FR with Black Core Holder
This coin earned a Mint State 70 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade is reserved exclusively for coins that lack any imperfections that can be seen under 5x magnification. The piece was also dubbed First Releases, meaning that NGC received it for grading no more than 30 days after the coin was released from the mint. It has been set in a sleek black core.
