Striking Lunar Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
Obverse: Joseph Menna sculpted Gary Cooper's obverse design. The names of the three NASA programs that led up to the moon landing, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," arch over a single footprint on the lunar surface. Also inscribed on this face are the date, "2019," the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "LIBERTY."
Reverse: Phebe Hemphill modeled her reverse design off of a famous photograph taken during the first lunar landing. Buzz Aldrin's helmet dominates this face, reflecting in its visor Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module. Reverse inscriptions include the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the coin's face value, "HALF DOLLAR," and the second statutory motto, "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
